Shingles in medical terms are caused by the virus called varicella-zoster which causes chickenpox. Nearly every person get chickenpox as a kid but get a cure in a week or two. A person is cured of chickenpox, but the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. After many years later, the virus may come back as shingles.

The symptoms of shingles include
- Pain, numbness or tingling and burning sensation
- Sensitivity to touch the skin
- Red rash starts to appear after a few days of pain
- The blisters are filled with fluids which break open and crust over
Many people may also feel fever, headache, and fatigue symptoms. Sometimes the pain is quite intense, depending on the location of the rash, some people experience shingles pain without getting the rash.
A person should immediately consult the doctor in cases of pain along with the rash, but particularly if the pain and rash occur near an eye as If left untreated, it can lead to permanent eye damage. The risk of getting shingles increases in old age and risk of complications of also increases.
Any person who has chickenpox in childhood may develop shingles when they grow old. A person may recover from chickenpox, but the virus lies dormant for years, and reactivate and travel along the nerve in your skin to produce shingles. A person who is 50 years old has a high risk of getting shingles. The risk of shingles increases with age. Many medical experts say the people of 80 years old will have shingles.
If a person has a shingles rash, he/she should refrain from scratching as it will result in prolonging blisters. If itching sensation does not improve, then a person should take healing bath, using baking soda or cornstarch mixture, or apply soothing lotions and creams made from natural ingredients. The lotions and creams do not speed up the healing process but increase your comfort level.
Applying organic creams containing the natural ingredient capsaicin three or four times per day also it eases the pain due to its anti-inflammatory ingredient. The person may initially feel pain while applying the cream, but it slowly goes away. Calamine lotion after baths is also another remedy to soothe irritated skin and help dry out blisters.
